A shipment of fake Labubu dolls that would be worth more than half a million dollars if the items were genuine was intercepted last week at Seattle's airport, authorities said. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers assigned to inspect air cargo at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport seized 11,134 dolls with a suggested retail price value of $513,937.76, a CBP spokesperson said Tuesday. The dolls were seized Aug. 26 after the officers determined the shipment violated federal law prohibiting unlawful imports and those that profit from others' intellectual holdings, the spokesperson said in a statement. The shipment was falsely labeled as "LED Bulb" and originated in South Korea, the spokesperson said. The ones intercepted in Seattle will be destroyed, the CBP spokesperson said. No arrests have been made, but they haven't been ruled out, the spokesperson said. Fake Labubus are often called "Lafufus." ALondon community councilthis month warned consumers thatbuying Lafufus comes with risks: Poor construction could lead to choking hazards if parts of the dolls fall off, it said, and the materials could include "harmful chemicals." The real dolls are made under the Pop Mart brand and are part of a group of characters, "The Monsters," that debuted in a Nordic mythology-inspired picture book trilogy in 2015. The characters and the story arethe brainchild of Hong Kong artist and author Kasing Lung.By 2019, toy giant Pop Mart turned them into viral vinyl collectibles, in part by selling them in "blind box" packages that don't reveal the version of Labubu within until they are opened. Labubu, a girl, made an appearance this month at the U.S. Open in New York City, where two-time champion Naomi Osakashowed off custom versionsthat included "Billie Jean Bling," made to look like pioneering champion Billie Jean King, and other tennis legends. In the city of La Puente, California, this month, the owners of a store called One Stop Sales saidburglars stole its inventory of Labubu dolls. A2020 reportby the Library of Congress' Federal Research Division estimated that counterfeit goods are worth more than the illicit drug trade in the United States. "Counterfeiting is the largest criminal enterprise in the world," it said. The division estimated 80% of counterfeit goods in the country come from China. Precious metal is sometimes used to help separate fakes from collectibles when it comes to other goods, such as Swiss watches. Some Labubu fans are obsessing over the possibility that a 24-karat gold version may exist, though that's unclear. Pop Mart did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Brian Humphrey, CBP's Seattle operations director, praised his officers on Xfor finding the fake Labubus and said the agency will remain diligent. "Excellent work by our diligent and meticulous CBPOs!" he said. "P.S. we're still on the lookout for the one and only 24K GOLD Labubu."

US military lawyers to serve as temporary immigration judgesNew Foto - US military lawyers to serve as temporary immigration judges

(Reuters) -Military and civilian lawyers working for the Defense Department will temporarily serve as immigration judges, officials said on Tuesday, the latest effort by President Donald Trump's administration to turn towards the military to carry out his domestic agenda. Trump, a Republican, kicked off a wide-ranging immigration crackdown after taking office in January. His administration has hailed its actions along the border, including the deployment of active duty troops, as the reason for a sharp decline in crossings by undocumented migrants. Trump made voters' concerns about immigration a cornerstone of his 2024 re-election bid. "These DOD attorneys will augment existing resources to help further combat a backlog of cases by presiding over immigration hearings," Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a statement. Military lawyers are not trained to serve as immigration judges. One U.S. official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Reuters that even with some additional training, it would be a tough task for military lawyers to learn the process, which is different from the military justice system they are trained in. This is not the first time the Trump administration has turned to military lawyers to shore up its domestic policy agenda. Last month, Reuters reported that the Washington, D.C., U.S. Attorney's office was planning to bring in about 20 people from the Department of Defense to serve as special assistant U.S. attorneys to help prosecute the misdemeanor cases. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has moved to reshape the top ranks of the military justice system, replacing the judge advocates general for the Army, Navy and Air Force. In his 2024 book, Hegseth was highly critical of military lawyers, saying most "spend more time prosecuting our troops than putting away bad guys." The Untold Story of the Lost Opening to 'I Love Lucy'New Foto - The Untold Story of the Lost Opening to 'I Love Lucy'

For generations, reruns of I Love Lucy have kept Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in living rooms everywhere. Even people who never sat down to watch an episode know the iconic opening: a heart floating on velvet with the show's title written across it. It's one of television's most familiar images, almost as lasting as Lucy's wide-eyed reactions or Ricky's exasperated "Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do!" But that famous heart wasn't always part of the show. In fact, the real original opening has been missing from reruns for decades. The reason why says a lot about how television used to work—and how it changed forever. The first season of I Love Lucy didn't begin with a floating heart at all. Instead, audiences were greeted by animated versions of Lucy and Ricky. The two cartoon stick figures danced around a giant pack of Philip Morris cigarettes, occasionally climbing down ropes or pulling stunts to grab attention. The scene even came with an enthusiastic voice-over proudly announcing, "Philip Morris presents the Lucille Ball–Desi Arnaz Show!" That animated opener wasn't a random creative decision. In the early 1950s, television shows were often directly tied to a single sponsor. For I Love Lucy, that sponsor was Philip Morris, and the opening sequence doubled as an advertisement. The animation itself came from William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who would later create Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, and other cartoon classics. So why don't most viewers today remember Lucy swinging on cigarette packs? Part of the answer is sponsorship. Philip Morris dropped out in 1955, and the show no longer needed an animated ad attached to every episode. By the late 1950s, I Love Lucy had already proven itself as one of the biggest hits in television history, so CBS began rerunning the series with a new, more neutral opening. That's when the velvet heart appeared. The other part of the story came years later. In 1970, the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act banned television ads for tobacco products. By that point, reruns were already using the heart design, but the law ensured the original cigarette-themed animations would never return to mainstream broadcasts. Image via Photo Images/Jupiter Images Even the music we now associate with Lucy had its own strange path. The signature I Love Lucy theme didn't appear in the very beginning. Instead, season one used classical music, a section of Ferde Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite, over the animated sponsor sequence. During the second season, the jaunty melody we all know was written by Eliot Daniel, though he asked to remain uncredited at first due to his contract with another studio. Only later did his name appear, thus allowing him to collect royalties for the rest of his life. The theme even had lyrics written for a season three episode where Ricky sings "I Love Lucy" to celebrate Lucy's birthday. That version never became the standard opening, but it showed how deeply the tune had already lodged itself in pop culture.
