The man charged in thedeadly shootingof an 11-year-old Texas boy was "waiting in the shadows" as the child and his cousin played a "ding-dong ditch" prank on his Houston home, police said. The suspect followed the boys as they ran away before he opened fire, according to Houston Police Sgt. Michael Cass, the lead detective on the case. Cass told CBS News the suspect was "waiting in the shadows in his own side yard behind a fence" after the boy and his cousin knocked on his door Saturday night and ran away. The boy, identified by police as Julian Guzman, was attending a family gathering about a block away in the east Houston neighborhood, and after getting bored, decided to go with his 10-year-old cousin and play ding-dong ditch, in which pranksters ring the doorbell or knock on the door of a home and then run away. Police said the two cousins had knocked three times on the suspect's door within a span of about 15 minutes. On the third knock, the cousins ran as fast as they could, but the homeowner was waiting behind the fence in his yard. Guzman was recording the incident on his phone, police said, showing himself knocking and running. Shots are heard on the video, police said, and there is audio of the boy gasping. Guzman's cousin told police he didn't know what to do, only what he had seen in movies, so he tried to pick him up. The boys appeared as children, "not threatening in any way," Cass said. Guzman was wounded when police arrived at the scene and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday, police said. Gonzalo Leon Jr., 42, has been charged with murder and booked into the Harris County jail, according toonline records. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Police said Leon is a former Army veteran who was deployed and spent time in the reserves. A handgun, 20 other guns and tactical and smoke grenades were found during a search of his home, they said. "Looked like he may have been a collector of firearms," Cass said. Police said they found Leon at a hotel in La Porte, Texas, with a packed car. The hotel was booked for three days, Cass said. Ukraine will never agree to legalise Russian occupation of Zaporizhzhia plant, ministry saysNew Foto - Ukraine will never agree to legalise Russian occupation of Zaporizhzhia plant, ministry says

(Reuters) -Ukraine will never agree to legalise the Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops is the only way to guarantee safety there, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday. A ministry statement made no direct reference to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's statement during a visit to China that Moscow was ready to cooperate with the United States at the plant, seized in the first weeks after Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. "The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is and will remain an integral part of the sovereign territory of Ukraine. Any attempts by Russia to question this fact are legally null and void and politically pointless," the ministry said. "The only way to restore nuclear safety is the immediate and complete withdrawal of Russian military and other personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant." China's Xi, flanked by Putin and Kim, hosts military parade in defiance of WestNew Foto - China's Xi, flanked by Putin and Kim, hosts military parade in defiance of West

By Laurie Chen BEIJING (Reuters) -China kicked off its largest-ever military parade on Wednesday, a show of its growing firepower and geopolitical clout as President Xi Jinping seeks to cast Beijing as the custodian of a post-U.S. international order. Flanked by Russia's Vladimir Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, Xi was shown on television strolling up a red carpet to take his seat for the lavish event at Tiananmen Square to mark 80 years since Japan's defeat at the end of World War Two. Wearing a suit in the style of those worn by former leader Mao Zedong, Xi earlier greeted around two dozen largely non-western leaders in attendance, including Indonesia's Prabowo Subianto, who made a surprise appearance despite widespread protests at home. He was shown saying "Nice to meet you" and "Welcome to China" in English. The highly choreographed "Victory Day" spectacle comes as U.S. President Donald Trump's "America First" stance and trade wars have strained Washington's long-standing alliances. Asked whether he sees the parade as a challenge to the United States on Tuesday, Trump said he didn't and reiterated his "very good relationship" with Xi. "China needs us much more than we need them," he added. More than 50,000 spectators at Tiananmen Square packed into stands in Tiananmen Square awaiting the 70-minute showcase of aerial displays, marching troops as well as cutting-edge military equipment such as hypersonic missiles, unmanned drones and outfitted tanks. Major roads and schools have been closed in Beijing for the parade, the culmination of weeks of painstaking security preparations and midnight rehearsals. Xi will review the troops lined up in formation before delivering a keynote speech atop the Gate of Heavenly Peace in Beijing, where a portrait of China's late Chairman Mao Zedong overlooks Tiananmen Square. VISION FOR NEW GLOBAL ORDER Xi has cast World War Two as a major turning point in the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation", in which it overcame the humiliation of Japan's invasion to become an economic powerhouse. He is expected to highlight China and Soviet Russia's triumph in defeating fascism and its role upholding the postwar international order during his speech at the ceremony. Earlier this week, Xi unveiled his vision of a new global order at a regional security summit, calling for unity against "hegemonism and power politics", a thinly veiled swipe at the United States and Trump's sweeping tariffs aimed at both friend and foe. Putin has already used the occasion to seal deeper energy deals with China, while the gathering offers Kim an opportunity to gain implicit support for his banned nuclear weapons. Kim, debuting in his first major multilateral event, will become the first North Korean to attend a Chinese military parade in 66 years. His daughter Ju Ae, whom South Korean intelligence consider his most likely successor, is making her international debut after years of being seen next to Kim at major domestic events. Nothing has been left to chance for the milestone gathering. Local governments nationwide have mobilised tens of thousands of volunteers and Communist Party members to monitor for any signs of potential unrest ahead of the parade, estimates based on online recruitment notices show. "President Xi will use this opportunity to showcase how the military is clearly, unmistakably behind him," said Wen-Ti Sung, fellow at the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub. Celebrities who have made an appearance have often discussed that getting ready for the Met Gala requires several hours of preparation and glam. While Aniston doesn't mind getting dolled up, she is not a fan of how much she would need to mentally prepare to go to the event. "It's the getting ready, the putting on the dress," she explained. "I'm a 'jeans and flip-flops and tank top' kind of girl. I love dressing up too, but for me it's a mental game of…'Let's get dressed up, put on a fancy dress, makeup, get your hair all 'purdy' and go sit in a big room with your peers.' [And yes,] everyone's there to celebrate each other and have some fun, but I get nervous." Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic The Morning Showstar also shared that she has a complicated relationship with attending carpeted events, adding that its often an excuse for critics to be excessively judgmental. "Some people find it like a sport where they build you up and then they love to tear you down," Aniston concluded. "What's the reason why people do it? Who knows? But I just try as best I can [to tune it out] because it doesn't do you any good." Aniston is one of the many A-list celebrities who have never attended the Met Gala — Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Mariah Carey, Ryan Gosling, Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Adele and more have yet to ascend the steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday of May. "The Grand Dame" is free. "Real Housewives of Potomac" star Karen Huger was released from prison Tuesday morning, according to the Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. The 62-year-old served a one-year sentence at the Montgomery County Detention Center in Maryland for driving under the influence and other charges. She wassentenced to two yearsin prison, with one suspended. Huger served her full time in the facility, according to a spokesperson for the department of correction and rehabilitation. Maryland has adiminution credit systemin which some inmates can earn a reduction in their sentence. Inmates who are not eligible for this system include those convicted of serious sexual offenses. Huger, a fan-favorite original "RHOP" cast member coined "the Grand Dame,"was convicted latelast year by aMontgomery County juryof DUI and other charges connected to a March 19, 2024, solo crash near Oaklyn Drive in Potomac. No one was injured in the crash. Prosecutors had requested six months in prison and defense lawyers wanted no time in favor of rehabilitation. Huger was branded a repeat offender by prosecutors, who pointed out three previous alcohol-related traffic cases between 2006 and 2011. None of those previous cases had led to prison time. Huger was sentenced to prison time, $2,900 in fines and five years of probation. She admitted fault in court, saying she was grateful no one was injured by her actions. Now that she's been released, Huger won't be allowed to drive for a year, and, if she violates probation, she could be sent back to prison to serve the year of suspended time. An attorney for Huger did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Fans and reality stars alike reacted to the news of Huger's release online. "She should've not been in jail, anyway," one commenter wrote on a post announcing her release. "Welcome home, Queen." Former "Real Housewives of Atlanta" peach-holder Marlo Hampton posted an Instagram story in support of Huger's homecoming. "Welcome home sis," Hampton captioned a video of Huger in full glam. Some were not as happy to see her free. "Not enough time for that drunk!" one commenter wrote. Others online speculated on if she would return to "RHOP." The show's 10th season will premiere on Oct. 5. "I want her back on the show ASAP, living her best life," one commenter wrote. Another commenter believes the Grand Dame will make an appearance on the season 10 reunion. Bravo did not respond to a request for comment.
