ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A wildfire burned through a northern suburb of the Greek capital of Athens on Saturday and some residents were ordered to evacuate, the country's Fire Service reported. Residents of the town of Kryoneri, 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) northeast of Athens received three SMS messages to evacuate to safe areas, Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis told reporters. Greek media have shown houses on fire. The spokesman said "there have been reports of damages. We will take stock when the fires have been put out." "The real difficulties are ahead of us," Vathrakoyannis said, adding that Greece has asked for six firefighting planes from the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. On site, 145 firefighters and 44 fire engines, 10 firefighting planes and seven helicopters are attempting to put out the fire, whose origin is unknown. Four ambulances are treating at least five residents, most of them elderly with respiratory problems. Temperatures reaching, or exceeding, 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), dry conditions and high winds are fanning the flames. Under such conditions wildfires "expand very quickly and become dangerous. These conditions are expected to prevail over the coming days," Vathrakoyannis said. The fire service is also dealing with three other major fires in the southwest on Greece's two largest islands — Crete in the south and Evia north of Athens — and also on the island of Kythera, northwest of Crete. At least 335 firefighters, 19 planes and 13 helicopters are involved, but can only operate in daylight. In total, 52 wildfires broke out across the country over the past 24 hours, the spokesman said. Wildfires, many of them destructive, have become a common occurrence in Greece in recent years.Severalhave broken outin the past month.

Cambodia and Thailand agree to ceasefire talks after days of cross-border fightingNew Foto - Cambodia and Thailand agree to ceasefire talks after days of cross-border fighting

A second day of border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia is prompting evacuations and raising tensions in Southeast Asia. CNN's Kristie Lu Stout has the latest. The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to meet for ceasefire talks after days of cross-border violence, according to statements on Saturday from both sides as well as US President Donald Trump. Trump said earlier in the weekend that he had spoken with both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting prime minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai in his efforts to restore peace. "They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!" Trump wrote on Truth Social in a series of posts on outlining his diplomatic efforts on Saturday. Trump said he had warned Hun Manet and Phumtham that he would not make trade deals with either country if the deadly border conflict continued. "They are also looking to get back to the "Trading Table" with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS," Trump wrote. Earlier this month, Trump wrote letters to Thailand and Cambodia threatening a 36% tariff on most of their exports to the US, starting August 1. Cambodia and Thailand both delivered substantial offers to their US counterparts in an effort to move to the front of the line for a trade agreement, officials said at the time. In the early hours of Sunday morning local time, Hun Manet thanked Trump and said that Cambodia agreed with "the proposal for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two armed forces." It added that he had previously called for a ceasefire to ASEAN chair and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. A statement from Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was more measured, saying it wished to see "sincere intention from the Cambodian side" – but that Phumtham had also "requested President Trump to convey …that Thailand wants to convene a bilateral dialogue as soon as possible to bring forth measures and procedures for the ceasefire and the eventual peaceful resolution of the conflict." Bangkok and Phnom Penh have been fighting over territory disputed since colonial power France drew the border between them more than a century ago. The reneweddeadly conflictpits longtime US ally Thailand, with decades of experience, against Cambodia's relatively young armed force with close ties to China. Since fighting broke out on Thursday, more than a dozen people have been reported killed, dozens wounded, and more than 150,000 civilians evacuated. Clashes have continued into Saturday, according to officials on both sides. The United Nations has condemned the violence, with Secretary General António Guterres offering his assistance "in any efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute" in a statement released Saturday by his spokesperson. NEW YORK CITY −Wildfire smoke wafted from Canadato create unhealthy air quality levels across the Northeast on July 26. State officials fromMaine to New Yorkissued alerts forfine particulate matter, a toxic byproduct of wildfires that is small enough to be inhaled. Smoky conditions impacted cities includingBostonand New York. Canada's fires could produce more smoke blowing into the Northeast through the afternoon, said Brooke Taber, a National Weather Service meteorologist stationed in Burlington, Vermont. Smoke is also causing limited visibility in some areas. Wind changes could provide a respite by the night, Taber said. Montreal had some of the worst air quality in the world due to fires in the Canadian Prairies, theCanadian Press reported, citingIQAir, a Swiss-based monitoring company. Several wildfires burning in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are sending large smoke plumes eastward, according to Quebec'sfire provincial agency. Meanwhile, New York City climbed on IQAir's list of cities with unhealthy air levels. Hazy skies and the faint smell of smoke blanketed Manhattan on Saturday. Officials urged people tostay indoors to reduce exposure, and to limit strenuous activity. Exposure can cause short-term effects such as irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, along with coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. It can be particularly dangerous for people in sensitive groups, such as children, older people and those with chronic health conditions, such as asthma or heart disease. Mike Coppola/Getty Nearly 20 years after playing the new girl, Kate Spencer, in 2006's high school comedyJohn Tucker Must Die,Brittany Snowis once again starring as a "fish out of water" in her new Netflix dramaThe Hunting Wives. "It's a full circle moment," Snow, 39, tells PEOPLE. "I feel like Kate, back in the day, was the most similar to me at that time. In the same way, Sophie is someone I really saw myself in." Like Sophie — a woman who moves from the East Coast to East Texas and becomes transfixed with socialite Margo Banks (Malin Akerman) — Snow has long been open about her anxiety and depression. "I related to Sophie in that she doesn't shy away from talking about it," says Snow, who first revealed her struggles withmental health and eating disorders at 21 in a 2007 PEOPLE essay. "It's nice that people are so open these days, and I'm glad I was a part of that trajectory in any way." Kent Smith/Netflix "During that time I had to learn how to handle my anxiety and my nerves," she says. "I'm sort of a nervous person by nature, and acting is not always conducive for that, in terms of walking into an audition. I didn't think I was ever going to work again because I felt like I had to restart my career. But that time off was hugely important for me to find out who I was. It was a restart, in a way, that gave me a clear path forward." By 12, she booked her first TV gig playing troubled teen Susan "Daisy" Lemay on the CBS soapGuiding Light, and she remained in the role from 1998-2001. AfterGuiding Light, Snow starred in the NBC dramaAmerican Dreamsfrom 2002-2005. "I never had a backup plan," she says of her acting career. CBS Starting withThe Pacifierin 2005, Snow carved out a successful film career for herself with box office hits likeJohn Tucker Must DieandHairspray(2007). Still, "I don't think I've made it," she says. "It's always a struggle," she says. "I'm always wondering what my next job is going to be or if going to 'make it,' in a way. I think that's the same for every actor — unless you're Tom Cruise or something." "I've been around since people were kids, so they grew up with me as I was growing up," she says. "I know with the people who influenced me the most, growing up, and the actresses that I looked up to, I do feel like I know them. And when I meet them, they mean more to me than anything because they showed me what it was like to be a woman." Courtesy Everett Collection One of her idols growing up wasClaire Danes, who she got to work with in the upcoming Netflix thrillerThe Beast in Me. "Working with Claire was probably one of the most fan-girl encounters that I've had in a long time, because I grew up withMy So-Called Life," she says. "I grew up withRomeo + Juliet,Little Women. I wanted to be Claire Danes. So, getting to work opposite of her and becoming friends with her was such an honor for me. She's always been someone I greatly admire, not only for her acting, but also for how she keeps her private life sacred." Though she's been "grieving" her dadJohn, 86, since his Alzheimer's disease diagnosisabout six years ago, she says he's still her "biggest cheerleader." "Alzheimer's is just a terrible, terrible disease," she says. "Not being able to tell him about certain things is really hard, but he's still there in a way. I do tell him everything that I can, and I can still hold his hand. I'm just holding onto those moments as tightly as possible because I know that his soul knows and is happy for me." Brittany Snow/Instagram No matter where her career takes her, Snow — who will also star in the Hulu Murdaugh Murders limited series later this year — is proud of the person she's become and is still becoming. "I think my idea of success when I was younger was this sort of one-track mind of needing to be Julia Roberts because as a 10-year-old girl, everyone wants to be Julia Roberts," she says. "I think as I've gotten older, I've realized that there's so many different forms of success. Success, to me, is the fact that I'm still doing this, and I love it even more now. I remind myself all the time that I didn't give up." Read the original article onPeople

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Teases Puppet Episode for Season 4New Foto - 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Teases Puppet Episode for Season 4

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is boldly going where no "Star Trek" show has gone before: to the world of puppets. At the "Star Trek Universe" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the cast and executive producers of "Strange New Worlds" debuted a teaser for the fourth season of the series, which just finished production. It revealed Capt. Christopher Pike sitting on the captain's chair of the Enterprise — but as a puppet. Meddling "There might have been an unexpected and terrible transporter accident," said executive producer Akiva Goldsman on the stage at Hall H. "Which might have had some unexpected felt-like effects." The puppets were created by Jim Henson's Creature Shop for the episode, which is directed by Jordan Canning ("Fragile Rock: Back to the Rock"). It's in keeping with the "Strange New Worlds" approach of treating each episode as its own unique genre, including horror, screwball comedy, costume fantasy and even a musical episode and a crossover episode with the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks." In a 2024Varietycover story on the future of "Star Trek," Goldsmaneven teased the puppet episode. "As long as we're in storytelling that is cogent and sure-handed, I'm not sure there is," Goldsman said when asked if there was a genre the show couldn't handle. "Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!" Stars Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn, Jess Bush, Paul Wesley and Christina Chong were joined by executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Henry Alonso Myers and Goldsman on the stage at Hall H. (Mount wasn't able to attend because his wife had just had a baby.) Goldsman addressed the announcement that "Strange New Worlds" will be concluding with its fifth season, noting that their plan is to take the series up to the first day Capt. James Kirk (Wesley) takes command of the Enterprise. Then he asked fans to write to Paramount (and its new parent company) Skydance so they can make "Star Trek: Year One" — set during the classic original series time period of the franchise. To further underline the show's genre-hopping, the next episode of "Strange New Worlds," a period murder mystery entitled "A Space Adventure Hour" played in its entirety to the audience at Comic-Con.
