Washington —French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron filed a defamation lawsuit against right-wing podcast host Candace Owens on Wednesday in response to claims she peddled that France's first lady was born a man. The22-count complaintwas filed in Delaware Superior Court and seeks an unspecified amount of damages from Owens, who broadcast an eight-part series spreading a host of allegations about the Macrons, including that Brigitte Macron was born a man, stole another person's identity and transitioned to a woman. The Macrons said in the lawsuit that Owens rebuffed three separate demands for retractions, with the first coming in December and the final sent July 1, and continued to push "outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions" about the French president and first lady. "These claims are demonstrably false, and Owens knew they were false when she published them," the lawsuit states. "Yet, she published them anyway. And the reason is clear: it is not the pursuit of truth, but the pursuit of fame." Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron said in a statement that they decided to file their lawsuit after Owens doubled down on the falsehoods despite their lawyers' retraction requests. "Ms. Owens' campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety," they said. "We gave her every opportunity to back away from these claims, but she refused. It is our earnest hope that this lawsuit will set the record straight and end this campaign of defamation once and for all." In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for Owens said: "Candace Owens is not shutting up. This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist. Candace repeatedly requested an interview with Brigitte Macron. Instead of offering a comment, Brigitte is resorting to trying to bully a reporter into submission. In France, politicians can bully journalists, but this is not France. It's America." The lawsuit takes aim at Owens for promoting unfounded theories and spreading misinformation and said she aims to "inflame and attract attention through sensationalism and conspiracy theories." It alleges that the podcaster published the eight-part series about the Macrons, called "Becoming Brigitte," and related posts on X with reckless disregard for the truth. "These lies have caused tremendous damage to the Macrons," the suit states. Owens and her entities, it continues, have "subjected the Macrons to a campaign of global humiliation, turning their lives into fodder for profit-driven lies. Owens has dissected their appearance, their marriage, their friends, their family, and their personal history—twisting it all into a grotesque narrative designed to inflame and degrade. The result is relentless bullying on a worldwide scale." Macron has been president of France since 2017. He and Brigitte Macron married in 2007. In addition to naming Owens as a defendant, the suit names her company, Candace Owens LLC, and the operator of her website, GeorgeTom, Inc. The baseless claims targeting Brigitte Macron began around March 2021 and were picked up by Owens in March 2024, while she was working for The Daily Wire, a conservative media outlet co-founded by Ben Shapiro, according to the lawsuit. She was fired from the outlet later that month. Following her termination, Owens launched her podcast, called "Candace," in June 2024 and continued to push the allegations about Brigitte Macron. The Macrons sent their first retraction demand to Owens in December 2024, after which she published the multi-part podcast series that the couple said raised "false and defamatory allegations" about Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron. The third and final demand for a retraction was sent earlier this month. The Macrons allege in their suit that Owens published the defamatory statements knowing they were false, and said she acted with reckless disregard for the truth. The standard in defamation lawsuits brought by public figures is actual malice, which requires a plaintiff alleging defamation to show that the defendant knew the statement was false or acted with reckless disregard for its falsity in order to prevail. France's president and first lady said Owens had a financial motivation to continue pushing the claims about Brigitte Macron, as her podcast series was monetized and used to solicit contributions, promote subscriptions and raise her brand. Tom Clare, who is representing the Macrons, said Owens' conduct is a"clear-cut case of defamation." Too much moose meat and antlers caused a plane crash in Alaska that killed congresswoman's husband, the NTSB reportsNew Foto - Too much moose meat and antlers caused a plane crash in Alaska that killed congresswoman's husband, the NTSB reports

Too much moose meat and antlers strapped to a wing caused a deadly small plane crash in Alaska, a nearly two-year long investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board determinedin a reportreleased Tuesday. The small Piper PA-18 plane had taken a group of hunters to a remote wilderness area near St. Mary's, Alaska on September 12, 2023, where they killed a moose, the report said. The first flight to ferry the meat to a larger airport was successful, but on a second trip the plane crashed just after takeoff. The hunters provided the pilot, who was the only person onboard the plane, with first aid, but he died a short time later. CNN previously reportedthe pilot killed was Eugene "Buzzy" Peltola Jr., the husband of Mary Peltola, who represented Alaska in the US House from 2022 to 2025. He also served as theregional directorof the Alaska Bureau of Indian Affairs for several years before retiring in 2022. Investigators determined the plane was loaded with 520 pounds of cargo – which was 117 pounds more than the plane could handle. Besides moose meat, the aircraft also had a set of antlers strapped to the wing. While it is a allowed to hang antlers on aircraft wings in Alaska, the NTSB found the required formal Federal Aviation Administration approval for the practice had not been granted for this plane. The NTSB's report concluded that the cause of the crash was the excess weight and the "unapproved external load" of the antlers, which "degraded takeoff performance and flight characteristics" leading to a loss of control. The plane itself was more than 70 years old, but so many pieces had been replaced "almost none of the original airplane existed," the NTSB report said. The day before the crash Rep. Peltola attended a September 11 commemoration in Anchorage with President Joe Biden and flew with him to Washington, DC on Air Force One. "Buzzy was a devoted public servant," Biden said at the time of the crash. "He is being remembered as a friend to all. But we know he was, first and always, the adored and devoted husband and father to a family now in pain." For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

California asks court to give state control of Los Angeles County's troubled juvenile hallsNew Foto - California asks court to give state control of Los Angeles County's troubled juvenile halls

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California's top prosecutor said Wednesday he has asked a court to give the state control of Los Angeles County's troubled juvenile detention facilities because incarcerated young people are enduring unsafe conditions, including violence and rampant drug abuse. Attorney General Rob Bonta said he wants the county to hand over administration of the juvenile jails to a third-party receiver, a court-appointed official who will take over management and operations from the Los Angeles County Probation Department. The official will have control over budgets and staffing decisions. "This is a last resort, but it's also the one left to defend the safety of the young people in these facilities," Bonta said. He said the "extraordinary step" was necessary because the county has failed to comply with a court order his office secured in 2021 requiring sweeping reforms. The probation department, which oversees the juvenile halls, didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Bonta outlined safety concerns such as "youth on youth" violence, riots, "unmet medical needs," low staffing, inadequate security cameras and drug overdoses, including one that led to the death of a teenager. Earlier this year Bonta indicted 30 probation officers accused of facilitating so-called "gladiator fights" between incarcerated juveniles. "These young people deserve better, and my office will not stop until they get it," Bonta said. "A receivership is the best and only option to turn Los Angeles County juvenile halls around, and we believe the court will agree." In addition, the attorney general asked the court to establish a compensation fund for incarcerated youth "to redress and repair the injuries suffered in the county's custody" and to cover medical and education expenses. A hearing is set for Aug. 15. Bonta said if the court approves the plan, a receiver could be in place by the end of the summer. Previously, the Board of State and Community Corrections issued "unsuitable" designations for the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall and Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall. The state board, which inspects the youth prisons, had determinedthat the county had been unable to correct problems including inadequate safety checks, low staffing, use of force and a lack of recreation and exercise. Bonta's request on Wednesday comes four years after Californiaphased outits three remaining state-run youth prisons and shifted the responsibility to counties. The move to local control was the final step in a lengthy reform effort driven in part by a class-action lawsuit and incentives for counties to keep youths out of the state system. The state-run system also had a troubled history marked by inmate suicides and brawls.

'The View' host Sunny Hostin warns Colbert cancellation could lead to the 'dismantling of our Constitution'New Foto - 'The View' host Sunny Hostin warns Colbert cancellation could lead to the 'dismantling of our Constitution'

"The View" co-host Sunny Hostin warned on Tuesday thatCBS canceling Stephen Colbert's "Late Show" could be the start of the "dismantling of our Constitution." CBS announced Thursday "The Late Show" will end in May at the end of its broadcast season. Though CBS and parent company Paramount said the choice to cancel the series was "purely a financial decision," and the show was reportedlylosing the network $40 million a year, many liberal commentators claim it was for political reasons. Just days before the cancellation,Colbert slammedParamount's recent settlement with President Donald Trump over his lawsuit against "60 Minutes" as a "big fat bribe" ahead of a pending merger between Paramount and Skydance Media. Hostin and her fellow co-hosts were also skeptical of CBS' explanation for canceling Colbert's show based on the "timing" of the announcement. She pointed out that if politics were involved, then the fabric of democracy could be in jeopardy. Cbs Staffer Calls Stephen Colbert Cancellation A 'Chilling Of Free Speech' "My concern is, if it is political, then everyone should be concerned. People on the right should be concerned. People on the left should be concerned. Because it's very clear that, if it is political, this is the dismantling of our democracy. This is the dismantling of our Constitution. Right?" Hostin said to the cheering of the studio audience. Read On The Fox News App She continued, "The First Amendment is the First Amendment for a reason and that is freedom of the press, freedom of speech. Freedom to speak truth to power. If that is taken away, if the comedians are being attacked, then that means our Constitution is being dismantled… That means the very rubric of our democracy is being dismantled. And I think every single person should be really, really concerned about it." Hostinpraised Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for speaking up on the issue and demanding answers. Several other high-profile Democrats also spoke out against canceling Colbert, whose show was openly favorable to their party while hostile to Republicans. "We must protect our Constitution and we must protect our democracy! This is bigger than just the cancellation of a television show!" Hostin exclaimed. Click Here For More Coverage Of Media And Culture Her co-host Joy Behar blamed Trump for Colbert's cancellation and warned "all bets are off" if comedians are taken down. "It's always been the role of the court jester to make fun of the king. That is the role of comedians. I have said on this show, I think I said it years ago, when they start coming for the comedian, all bets are off, because the king is supposed to take the hits and this guy has a skin thinner than, I don't know, than this card," Behar said, holding one up. Colbert fired back against Trumpon his show Monday night after the president celebrated his show ending on Truth Social, writing, "I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. "How dare you, sir?" Colbert responded. "Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f--- yourself."
