4-year-old attacked by mountain lion at Olympic National Park, officials say

A four-year-old was attacked by a mountain lion at Olympic National Park in Washington state, the National Park Service said. The attack happened at about 3:15 p.m. on July 20 near the Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park, thepark service said in a statement. The mountain lion, which was collared, bit the child on a popular trail as the minor walked with family. Paramedics and park staff airlifted the victim to a trauma center in Seattle, where the child is undergoing treatment, the park service said. Officials did not provide additional information about the child, citing privacy reasons. Rangers began searching for the cougar immediately after the attack and were later joined by a canine team, the park service confirmed. Park staff later located the mountain lion and "dispatched the animal" on July 21. "There are no current threats to the public," the park service said. The incident remains under investigation. Though attacks on humans are rare, mountain lions are a potentially dangerous animal, theNational Park Service warnedon its website. Male cougars can weigh up to 150 pounds, while female cougars can weigh between 75 and 100 pounds. In 2024, ahorrific mountain lion attackleft one man dead and another injured in a remote forest area in Northern California. Taylen Robert Claude Brooks, 21, was killed during the attack in the small community of Georgetown, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Officeposted in a statementon social media at the time. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service offers guidelines on howpeople can stay safe while navigating a mountain lion habitat, including hiking with a companion and being aware of their surroundings. If someone encounters a puma in the wild, the service advises people to do the following: "Do not approach." "Stop, stay calm, and do not turn your back. Do not run." "Face the animal, stand upright, talk calmly and firmly to the cougar, and give it a way to escape if you can". Do all you can to appear larger. For example, open your jacket and raise or wave your arms. "Pick up small children or pets immediately so they won't panic, flee, or make rapid movements." "If the cougar becomes more aggressive, become more aggressive toward it. Convince the animal that you are not prey, but a danger to it." "Fight back if attacked." Storm Wipha hits northern Vietnam with strong winds and heavy rain

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) —Tropical Storm Wiphamade landfall in northern Vietnam on Tuesday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the country's north and central regions. The storm came ashore at 10 a.m. with sustained winds of 64–102 kilometers per hour (40–63 mph), and gusts up to 138 kph (86 mph), according to local weather officials. After landfall, it began moving southwest. Wipha was classified as a typhoon on Monday while over open water, but weakened overnight and was downgraded to a tropical storm before reaching land. The storm knocked out power in parts of Hung Yen Province, east of Hanoi. Residents rushed to gas stations to buy fuel for generators, state media reported. The streets of capital city, Hanoi, were nearly empty as the storm moved inland. Most businesses were closed and the city government has advised residents to stay home and evacuate buildings that are unstable or in flood-prone areas. "If the storm is serious, people shouldn't go out anyway because it would be dangerous on the road and there is also a chance of flooding," said Minh Doan, a taxi driver in Hanoi. Flights were canceled across northern Vietnam, and airports in the port city of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh province were closed. Nearly 150,000 hectares (370,000 acres) of aquaculture farms and more than 20,000 floating fish cages are at risk from flooding and strong winds, according to state media. Vietnam has warned of flooding as heavy rain from Storm Wipha moves inland. In the Philippines, more than 80,000 people remain in emergency shelters after floods, landslides and tidal surges over the weekend. Most government offices and schools in the capital and 10 provinces were shut Tuesday due to widespread flooding from heavy monsoon rains, and droops evacuated residents from villages swamped by knee- to waist-deep water while the coast guard deployed buses and boats to assist stranded commuters. At least three people have died. Global warming is making storms like Wipha stronger and wetter, said Benjamin P. Horton, dean of the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong. Warmer oceans give tropical storms more fuel, leading to more intense winds, heavier rain and shifting rainfall patterns across East Asia. It took 40 years, but Pee-wee's bike is now at the Alamo. Just not the basement. The Alamo announced last week it had acquired and would display the iconic bike from the 1985 Tim Burton film, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." The San Antonio landmark plays a key role in the film chronicling Pee-wee Herman's search for his stolen bicycle when a devious fortuneteller tells him the bike is located in the Alamo's basement. Pee-wee,played by the late Paul Reubens, learns the Alamo doesn't have a basement, but hasn't stopped tourists from tongue-in-cheek inquiries. "It's the most common question our guest services team hears is, 'Where is the basement at the Alamo?'" said Jonathan Huhn, senior communications director for the Alamo Trust, Inc., the nonprofit organization that oversees the Alamo's operations. "It's an iconic piece of Alamo pop-culture history." The red-and-white bike — or as Pee-wee calls it in the movie, "the best bike in the whole world" — is adorned with streamers on the handlebars and a lion emblem at the front. Huhn said it was acquired from an auction in Los Angeles. The bike will serve as a centerpiece in the Mays Family Legacy Gallery, which examines the the Alamo's cultural impact, part of a new visitor center and museum slated to open in fall 2027. It will join other pop culture items including memorabilia from the 1960 movie about the Alamo that starred John Wayne. "It's really a pop culture bridge" that will bring people to learn about the Alamo's history, Huhn said. But before then, the bike will go on display for a limited time at the Ralston Family Collections Center. The Alamo also plans to host a free public screening of "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" in Plaza de Valero. More details about dates for the display and the screening will be released later. Unlike the Alamo, the building where Pee-wee's bike will eventually be located does have a basement. But, before you ask, that's not where the bike will be.
