DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — An Israeli strike on a residential buildingin the Gaza Stripon Monday killed 14 people, mostly women and children, according to health officials. The Shifa and al-Ahli hospitals confirmed the toll from the strike in the built-up Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, saying five women and seven children were among those killed. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Israel says it only targets militants and tries to avoid harming civilians. It blames civilian deaths on Hamas because the militant group is entrenched in populated areas. The Israel-Hamas war began when Palestinian militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251. Hamas is still holding 58 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Israel's military campaign has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants. The offensive has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of the population. Hamas has said it will only release the remaining hostages in return for more Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli pullout. Israel has vowed to continue the war until all the hostages are returned, and Hamas is defeated or disarmed and sent into exile. It has said it will maintain control of Gaza indefinitely and facilitate what it refers to as the voluntary emigration of much of its population. Palestinians and most of the international community have rejected the resettlement plans, viewing them as forcible expulsion. ___ Follow AP's war coverage athttps://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war

A volcanic eruption in Italy left people scurrying for cover from what officials are saying is a pyroclastic flow. Several videos circulating online show people running as smoke from the side of Mount Etna, an active stratovolcano volcano in Sicily, filled the air on June 2. Footage and photoswere also sharedby the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Italy. The government agency wrote in a translated post that a pyroclastic flow, acombination of ash, rock, and gas,"probably produced by the collapse of material from the northern side of the Southeast Crater." The INGV added that the "explosive activity" has "moved to "a lava mountain." According to GB News, an international news outlet, a spokesperson for the institute explained that "the values of the tremor amplitude are currently high with a tendency to increase further." Previous Mount Etna eruption:Skiers glide by flowing lava Europe's largest and most active volcano, Mount Etna, islocated on the eastern coast of Sicily, Italy,in the province of Catania, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The active stratovolcano is known for its frequent and persistent eruptions, and volcanic activity in the region can range from explosive eruptions to lava flows and ash emissions, USGS says. Who is Mohamed Soliman? FBI raids home of suspect in Colorado terror attackNew Foto - Who is Mohamed Soliman? FBI raids home of suspect in Colorado terror attack

Using an incendiary device and a makeshift flamethrower, authorities say a manattacked an event calling for the release of Israeli hostagesin Gaza at apedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado, leaving at least eight people injured in what the FBI is investigating as "an act of terrorism." The lone suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, of El Paso County, Colorado, was taken into custody at the scene after witnesses pointed him out, authorities said. Officials have not released many details about Soliman. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said on X that Soliman entered the U.S. in August 2022 on a B-2 tourist visa that expired over two years ago. Multiple outlets said he is an Egyptian national, includingCBSandFox News, citing unnamed sources. Soliman was booked on multiple preliminary charges including first-degree murder and using explosives or an incendiary device while committing a felony, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Prosecutors are still weighting what charges to file against him. Police said Soliman was injured in the incident and taken to a hospital to be medically evaluated before being booked in the Boulder County jail. His bond has been set at $10 million, records show. Local law enforcement was dispatched Sunday at 1:26 p.m. to the outdoor Pearl Street Mall, where a man had launched an attack against a weekly, peaceful event advocating for the release of hostages in Gaza, according to the Boulder Police Department. Witnesses said the attacker used a makeshift flamethrower and threw an incendiary device into the crowd, said Mark Michalek, special agent in charge at the FBI's Denver field office. He said witnesses heard the suspect yell "free Palestine." Eight victims – four women and four men, ages 52 to 88 – were injured in the attack and brought to hospitals in the Denver metro area, according to the Boulder Police Department. "As a result of these preliminary attacks, it is clear that this is a targeted act of violence and the FBI is investigating this as an act of terrorism," Michalek said. McLaughlin said Soliman's tourist visa expired in February 2023, six months after he arrived in the U.S. In general, B-2 visas are valid for six months and can be used for vacations, visiting relatives, medical treatment or participation in music, sports or events. TheState Department issuesmillions of B-1 and B-2 visas each year. B-1 visas are similar to B-2 and allow for nonimmigrants to visit for six months for conferences and business for six months. In addition, McLaughlin said Soliman applied for asylum in September 2022. That claim was likely still pending. As of March, the immigration court backlog was around3.6 million cases, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Milleron X described Soliman as an "illegal alien"and criticized the Biden administration, which he accused of approving a work permit for Soliman after he overstayed his tourist visa. FBI agents searched Soliman's home in El Paso County hours after he was named the suspect in the pedestrian mall attack. "The FBI is at a location in El Paso County, CO, conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity related to the attack on the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder,"the agency's field office in Denver said on X. "As this is an ongoing investigation, no additional information is available at this time." The agency has not provided details about the search. Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn at a news conference said authorities do not believe there are any additional suspects at large in connection with the attack. "We are not going to say that with absolute certainty, because we're still conducting a lot of interviews," he told reporters, adding, "We are fairly confident we have the lone suspect in custody." At the same news conference, Michalek said authorities have not found any link between the suspect and a greater criminal network or particular group. He added, however, that "this will be a thorough and complete investigation and those checks are ongoing." "We are early in the investigative process but both sides are working collaboratively and we'll see where the investigation goes," he said. Boulder County District Attorney Michael Doherty said he and his office will work with the U.S. attorney's office to determine what charges to file against Soliman. "There are a couple different options," he told reporters at a news conference. "But what I would stress now, most importantly, is that we are fully united – 100% – in making sure the charges we bring hold the attacker fully accountable." Old Dominion's new album, 'Barbara,' won't lean on band's record-breaking laurelsNew Foto - Old Dominion's new album, 'Barbara,' won't lean on band's record-breaking laurels

NEW YORK (AP) — WhenOld Dominion's eighth group of the yearvictory broke the tie for consecutive wins at theAcademy of Country Music Awardslast month, it changed the record books — but not their perspective. "They're certainly wonderful honors that we get, but that's not in any way how we really measure our success or think. We can't let that kind of stuff creep in to the creative process because that's when we'll start to get off course," said Matthew Ramsey, lead vocalist and guitarist. "We try to protect each other from those outside influences a little bit and just make sure that we're … not chasing after some sort of reaction or award, or chasing after what we think the radio wants to play. We just have to make what we love." Old Dominion has been celebrated for intertwining different musical styles whilewithin country music. Along with Ramsey, the band includes Brad Tursi (guitar/banjo), Trevor Rosen (guitar/piano), Geoff Sprung (bass) and Whit Sellers (percussion). They have spent the last two years crafting "Barbara," out Aug. 22 via Columbia Nashville/Sony Music Nashville. The project follows 2023's "Memory Lane" album and last year's "Odies But Goodies" compilation, which Ramsey says is even more eclectic than past works. "We just write constantly. And we've had albums where we've kind of gone deeper into the well and picked out older songs," explained the 47-year-old. "This one, not so much the case." The 13-track album is not named after a real woman but is an imagined composite of a person who embodies many of the group's various personality traits. It includes the released singles "Me Most Nights" and "Making Good Time," along with the four-on-the-floor "Talk Country" and the R&B-infused "What Doesn't Kill a Memory." Just as introspection is a fundamental element of country music, it's also the sweet spot on this album. "Miss You Man" is dedicated to friend and writing collaborator Andrew Dorff, who died in 2016 during a vacation, while "Goodnight Music City" reflects on the band's career. "It has all the reverence about Nashville and a little bit of the jaded side to it, too. We've been through it in Nashville, as anyone goes through when they're trying to chase this crazy dream," said Ramsey, who revealed the song is inspired by the children's book "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown. "It's such a meaningful song to us all … we've played it live one time at the Ryman Auditorium, and we were all crying by the end of it." The band also looks within on "Man or the Song," as Ramsey questions, "If I put my guitar down, would I disappear? / Move back to my hometown, would you still be here?" Ramsey says it's his favorite song. "That's kind of what it feels like once you get to this level and you're surrounded by all these people that are helping you make your dreams come true," he said. "Who's around for the right reasons can certainly creep into the conversation. It can be a lonely profession … I hope you love me for me, and not for this crazy job I have." Coinciding with the release of "Barbara," the band is prepping its "How Good Is That" world tour which launches in September. Throughout the past decade, Old Dominion has earned a loyal fan base in a genre often criticized as rigid, with frequentdebates about equal radio play, what determines pure country music andwho should be allowed to participate. But while there's no denying the group is authentically country, the irony is not lost on them that they've been able to cut through the Nashville noise by not sticking to only traditional country sounds. "Whenever we wrote a song and recorded it, we just wanted to make sure that we were not chasing anything other than the truest form of that song and what was going to deliver that message as clearly as we wanted it to be," said Ramsey. "Our fans now, I think, are coming to expect that from us; they're looking for the surprise that we're gonna throw in there, rather than the same old thing. … We don't take that for granted. We know that's a rare thing in the genre." "Barbara" will be released Aug. 22. 'Barbara' tracklist 1. "Making Good Time" 2. "Water My Flowers" 3. "Me Most Nights" 4. "Man or the Song" 5. "Break Your Mama's Heart" 6. "Miss You Man" 7. "Talk Country" 8. "Late Great Heartbreak" 9. "Crying in a Beach Bar" 10. "One of Us" 11. "What Doesn't Kill a Memory" 12.
