PresidentDonald Trumpannounced that he is extending the deadline for a 50% tariff onthe European Unionuntil July 9, a measure he had earlier said would go into effect on June 1. "I received a call today from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, requesting an extension on the June 1st deadline on the 50% Tariff with respect to Trade and the European Union," Trumpposted on Truth Socialon May 25, adding that von der Leyen said "talks would begin rapidly." In apost on X, von der Leyen described the conversation with Trump as a "good call." "The EU and US share the world's most consequential and close trade relationship," von der Leyen added. "Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9." Trump's announcement comes just two days after he threatened the EU with a 50% tariff after having paused reciprocal tariffs on it and other nations in April. "The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with," Trump said ina social media poston May 23, a resumption of his threats after pausing reciprocal tariffs on the EU and other nations in April. "Our discussions with them are going nowhere!" the president added. Trump's proposed 50% tariffs on European Union goods would hit roughly $606 billion in imported products. That's the value of goods exported to the United States from the European Union in 2024, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative. The United States is the EU's largest trading partner, purchasing 21% of its exports, according to EU data. Trump says he wants 'names and countries' of all international students at HarvardNew Foto - Trump says he wants 'names and countries' of all international students at Harvard

Donald Trumpsaid he wants the "names and countries" of every international student enrolled at Harvard University, another step in the president's crackdown on the Ivy League school. He made the request in a Truth Social post May 25, days after afederal judge blockedthe Trump administration's effort to bar the universityfrom enrolling anyonein the United States on a student visa. "We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, but Harvard isn't exactly forthcoming," Trump wrote. "We want those names and countries." Trump didn't immediately say how the federal government would use that information, or which part of his administration would manage such lists. USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for more information. Trump's post comes after Homeland Security SecretaryKristi Noemsent a letter to Harvard leaders saying the university's participation in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program would be terminated "effective immediately." That's a critical prerequisite for colleges and universities to enroll international students. All international students would need to transfer to another university to stay in the United States, she said. Harvard then sued the administration, calling the move a "blatant violation" of the First Amendment's protections, as well as the14th Amendment's guarantees of due processand other legal rights. Judge Allison Burroughs, appointed by former President Barack Obama, on May 23 sided with the school in a temporary order. She wrote in her decision that the policy would bring "immediate and irreparable injury" to Harvard's campus. Elite universities, Harvard included, have caught much of Trump's ire during his second administration. Federal agencies under his direction have zeroed in on schools they allege aren't protecting Jewish students from antisemitism, in addition to targeting diversity efforts on campuses across the country. A new spending bill in Congress would alsoincrease the taxwealthy private universities pay on the investment gains they make on their endowments. A college endowmentis a combination of charitable donations, gifts and investment income, and is used to further the work of a university and its programs. Appearing to incorrectly reference Harvard's roughly$53 billionendowment, Trump wrote on social media, "Harvard has $52,000,000, use it, and stop asking for the Federal Government tocontinue GRANTING money to you!" Suspected arson causes a second major power outage in south of FranceNew Foto - Suspected arson causes a second major power outage in south of France

NICE, France (AP) — A second major power outage hit southeasternFranceearly Sunday, this time in the city of Nice, after an electrical facility was damaged by suspected arson. Police currently have not established a link between the blackout that affected parts of Nice as well as nearby cities of Cagnes-sur-Mer and Saint-Laurent-du-Var, and a power outage on Saturday thatdisrupted the city of Cannesduring the closing day of its renownedfilm festival. The Nice blackout started around 2 a.m. and left some 45,000 households without electricity. The city's trams stopped and power was briefly cut to the Nice Côte d'Azur airport during its overnight closure hours. Power was fully restored by 5:30 a.m., according to the energy provider company Enedis. The Nice public prosecutor said a criminal investigation has been opened for "organized arson." On Saturday, two other installations in the Alpes Maritime department were damaged in what officials also suspected to be arson, temporarily cutting power to 160,000 homes, including events at the Cannes Film Festival. An unknown anarchist group claimed responsibility for the Cannes outage in a lengthy posting on the website indymedia.org. "We are two bands of anarchists," said the statement published Sunday by an unknown user. "We claim responsibility for the attack on electrical installations on the Côte d'Azur." Authorities have not verified the statement, and police have not commented on the claim. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi condemned Sunday's attack and said the city had filed a complaint. "I strongly denounce these malicious acts targeting our country," he said on X. He ordered all sensitive electrical infrastructure in the city to be placed under police protection. "These actions can have serious consequences, particularly on hospitals," Estrosi said at a press briefing on Sunday. "As long as the perpetrators haven't been caught, we will remain on high alert."
