Japan is sticking to demand for US to eliminate tariffs, trade envoy saysNew Foto - Japan is sticking to demand for US to eliminate tariffs, trade envoy says

By Leika Kihara TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan's top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, said on Tuesday there was no change to Tokyo's stance of demanding an elimination of U.S. tariffs in bilateral trade negotiations. Tokyo will not rush into clinching a trade deal if doing so risked hurting the country's interests, he said. "The slew of U.S. tariffs including reciprocal tariffs as well as those on automobiles, car parts, steel and aluminium, are regrettable. There's no change to our stance of seeking a review, which is to say an elimination, of them," Akazawa told a regular press conference. Akazawa said the two countries held working-level trade talks in Washington on Monday. The schedule of a third round of ministerial-level negotiations was yet to be fixed, he added. Japan's Kyodo news agency reported on Tuesday that Akazawa will travel to Washington this week to attend the third round of talks potentially starting on Friday. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to attend the talks, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be absent, Kyodo reported without citing sources. On April 2, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 10% tariffs on all countries except Canada, Mexico and China, along with higher tariff rates for many big trading partners, including Japan, which faces a 24% tariff rate starting in July unless it can negotiate a deal with Washington. Japanese policymakers and ruling party lawmakers have said they see no merit in striking a deal with the United States unless a 25% tariff on automobile imports is lifted, given the industry's economic importance. While Japan was the first major economy to start bilateral trade talks with Washington, Britain was the first to strike a deal with the Trump administration. China and the United States also agreed to a 90-day truce in their trade war that had threatened a global recession. With initial hope of a quick deal failing, the Nikkei newspaper reported last week that Japan may water down its demand to a reduction, rather than an elimination, of U.S. tariffs. A source with knowledge of the negotiations has told Reuters that Japan is considering a package of proposals to gain U.S. concessions that may include increased imports of U.S. corn and soy, technical cooperation in shipbuilding, and revision to inspection standards for imported automobiles. A fourth inmate in a group of 10 whoescaped from New Orleans' main jailFriday has been captured, Louisiana State Police said Monday. Gary C. Price, 21, was found in New Orleans, the agency said in a statement. He is charged with first-degree murder and was being held without bond as he awaited court proceedings, according to court documents. "Price will ultimately be transported to a secure state facility outside of the area," state police said Monday. Six others remained at large Monday evening. On Sunday, officials said they believed the remaining escapees would be found and placed back into custody in short order. More than 200 law enforcement personnel were looking for them, authorities said, and a reward for information leading to the capture of each man has grown to $20,000. "We're confident at this time that we have actual intelligence on all of those fugitives," the state police superintendent, Col. Robert Hodges, said at a news conference Sunday night. The 10 escaped shortly after midnight Friday from the jail at the Orleans Parish Justice Center by using a rectangular hole behind a bathroom fixture in a cell. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said she suspected personnel "inside of our department" may have been involved. Three employees were ultimately placed on leave without pay pending investigation. The state attorney general is investigating the escape.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The person killed in ashooting at a Las Vegas fitness centerlast week was a longtime employee who had no known connection to the shooter, police said Monday. Edgar Quinonez, 31, of Las Vegas, was shot and killed Friday at the Las Vegas Athletic Club, police said. Arriving officers fired at the suspected shooter, 34-year-old Daniel Ortega, as he exited the gym after firing 24 rounds, police said. Ortega, a gym member, died of gunshot wounds, according to police. Three other people were injured at the gym on the city's west side as gunfire erupted. They were transported to local hospitals, with one in critical condition. Their conditions weren't released on Monday. Officials are still investigating a motive, saying they have found no connection between the two men. Jamie Prosser, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department assistant sheriff, said at a media briefing on Monday that Ortega entered the gym with a rifle on Friday afternoon. She said he approached an employee at the front desk and paced around before briefly exchanging words with another employee. Then he lifted the rifle and shot the employee as he fled into the gym, she said. Ortega followed and continued firing, Prosser said, and at some point Ortega returned to the lobby and fired until the weapon malfunctioned. An arriving officer fired at Ortega when he opened the entrance door and he was shot by officers as he left the building with the rifle. He died at a nearby hospital, police said. She said Ortega worked out at the gym but at this time there was no known connection to the victim.

'Love Island' contestant Cashel Barnett charged with domestic violence in UtahNew Foto - 'Love Island' contestant Cashel Barnett charged with domestic violence in Utah

"Love Island" contestant Cashel Barnett is accused of assaulting his ex in front of their child and was being held without bail in a Utah jail Monday. The district attorney in Salt Lake County filed charges against Barnett, 34, on May 12 that include felony aggravated assault, felony domestic violence in the presence of a child and two counts of misdemeanor assault. A lawyer for Barnett said Barnett turned himself in Monday morning and is awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday. "We are obviously in the very early stages here and won't have any comment until after that hearing," Andrew K. Deesing said by email. Salt Lake City police said the mother of the pair's 1-year-old child reported an incident, which she said happened April 10, on April 24. She told police that when she tried to calm Barnett during an argument in front of the child, he slapped her arms and picked her up by her neck using both hands before he slammed her onto a bed, the police report says. The report alleges that Barnett allegedly throttled the woman with "continuous pressure" and that the woman "was unable to breathe and her vision went blurry." "Barnett then slapped [the woman] in the face and said, 'You're fine,'" the police report says. The woman told police she experienced "difficulty breathing, a raspy voice, coughing, trouble swallowing, neck pain, nausea, vomiting, agitation, amnesia, memory loss, visual changes, and headache," according to the police report. It does not mention whether she sought medical attention. The warrant request warns that the woman is at high risk for homicide and says she told authorities that Barnett had previously threatened to kill her, the report says. Court records confirm he was not in custody for days following approval of the May 12 warrant request. Barnett, who is based in Salt Lake City-based, appeared on the first season of "Love Island" in 2019. According to his social media accounts and websites, he now plays the drums in multiple bands, works as a model and sells custom birthday and greetings videos for prices that start at $25.
