Severe floods hit Argentina farm region, thousands evacuateNew Foto - Severe floods hit Argentina farm region, thousands evacuate

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) -Thousands of residents evacuated on Saturday as rains lashed the north of Argentina's Buenos Aires province, a vital agricultural hub, and caused severe flooding. The National Meteorological Service, which issued a red alert for the region on Friday evening, reported rainfall between 150 and 250mm (6-10 inches) between the cities of Zarate and Arrecifes. It warned that storms were "constantly regenerating," with more rain expected. Television images showed residents in Zarate, 100 km (62 miles) from the capital, navigating submerged streets in boats loaded with belongings. A long-distance bus with 44 passengers was trapped by floodwaters on Route 9 near Zarate. "Water started coming in and covered everything," the driver told the local C5N television channel. In San Antonio de Areco, more than 260mm fell in 24 hours – an amount local mayor Francisco Ratto called "rarely surpassed." The heavy precipitation in the key food-exporting region is anticipated to cause further delays to the ongoing soybean harvest. Argentina is the top global exporter of soybean meal and oil, as well as the third-largest exporter of corn and a major wheat exporter. Body found in Lake Lanier, days after Georgia kayaker goes missing, sheriff's office saysNew Foto - Body found in Lake Lanier, days after Georgia kayaker goes missing, sheriff's office says

Authorities in Georgia have recovered a body fromLake Lanier, and while they have identified the individual, the discovery comes days after akayaker went missing at the lake. TheForsyth County Sheriff's Officeannounced the recovery of the body on the afternoon of May 16, and the update came hours after the kayak and paddle, believed to belong to Dustin Valencia, 43, were reportedly found. According to the sheriff's office, Valencia, a father of five children, went missing on May 14 when he took his family's Intex inflatable kayak on thelargest lake in Georgia, which contains over38,000 acres of waterand over 690 miles of shoreline. In the May 16 afternoon update on the search, the sheriff's office said that although the body was recovered from the lake, no positive identification has been made. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return a request from USA TODAY for an update on May 17. Valencia was believed not to have a life vest, but he did have one plastic oar, the sheriff's office said. When Valancia's kayak was found, the seats were "not inflated or installed,"WALBreported, citing the sheriff's office. Valencia's wife, Jennifer Valencia, reported her husband missing on May 14, telling deputies that their children were the last to see him after he left earlier in the day to have their vehicle serviced, according to an incident report obtained by USA TODAY. Valencia returned home that day around 1 p.m. before leaving in their black 2006 Honda Accord, his wife told deputies, per the incident report. When Valencia did not pick up the couple's children from school at 3 p.m., his wife tried to call his phone, but received no response. Using the "Find My iPhone" app, Jennifer Valencia tracked her husband's last known location, however, he wasn't at that location when she arrived to look for him. At this point, she contacted law enforcement to file a missing persons report, the incident report reads. Valencia's wife confirmed that he does not suffer from any known medical conditions or mental health issues, and that there were no known threats of self-harm. She stated that her husband usually communicates with her regularly and always keeps her informed, the incident report continued. While canvassing the area Valencia was last known to be, deputies found the family's black Honda Accord parked at Little Ridge Park on Lanier Beach South Road. Assuming Valencia may have gone kayaking, deputies searched the nearby water and walked surrounding trails, but they could not locate him, the incident report says. Germany, Italy say Europe's leaders 'far from' talks on troop deployment in UkraineNew Foto - Germany, Italy say Europe's leaders 'far from' talks on troop deployment in Ukraine

ROME/BERLIN (Reuters) -Europe is a long way from talking about deploying troops in Ukraine as all its efforts are currently focused on securing an unconditional ceasefire from Russia, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday. "The next step must be that the format for peace talks is made clear, as well as which security guarantees could possibly, one day, be necessary for Ukraine," Merz said, describing these matters as currently unforeseeable. "There is no reason to talk about (troops) at the moment, we are far from that. We want the weapons to stop, the killing to end ... these are the questions we are dedicated to now, and no others," he added. The leaders of France, Germany, Britain and Poland, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, met on the sidelines of a summit in Albania on Friday to discuss the situation. They also called U.S. President Donald Trump, who said on Saturday he would speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Meloni did not take part in the meeting - an absence that Italian media has described as a deliberate snub, suggesting that French President Emmanuel Macron had not wanted her involved. Meloni told reporters on Saturday that Italy was open to joining any international format aimed at ending the war, but warned against divisions within the West. "Western unity has been our greatest strength since the beginning of Russia's invasion," she said. "At a delicate time like this, it is important to set aside any personal (differences) that could undermine that unity." 'BELOW EXPECTATIONS' The European Union is working on a new package of sanctions to increase pressure on Moscow over the war, after the first face-to-face talks between Russia and Ukraine in three years on Thursday failed to yield a ceasefire, though Russia agreed to continue contacts. "Yesterday's talks in Istanbul ended below our expectations despite the extremely constructive positioning of Ukraine's negotiators," Merz said. Merz's position on peacekeeping troops echoes that of his predecessor Olaf Scholz, who also prioritised peace deal talks over discussion of boots on the ground. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has previously expressed willingness to send peacekeeping troops, but only backed by a U.S. security commitment for European countries. Russia has repeatedly rejected the idea of soldiers from countries in the NATO military alliance being stationed in Ukraine. (Reporting by Victoria Waldersee in Berlin, Crispian Balmer in Rome. Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson's Animalistic Descent Into Madness in 'Die My Love' Gets 6-Minute Cannes Standing OvationNew Foto - Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson's Animalistic Descent Into Madness in 'Die My Love' Gets 6-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation

Jennifer Lawrence has electrified the Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere of "Die, My Love," the latest directorial effort from the acclaimed Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay. The movie earned a 6-minute ovation following its world premiere. "Die, My Love" is in competition at Cannes and competing for the Palme d'Or. Ramsay cut her own ovation short, struck with emotion. More from Variety 'Die My Love' Review: Jennifer Lawrence Is a Mother Grappling with Postpartum Depression (and Punk-Rock Angst) in Lynne Ramsay's Showy Mess of a Marital Psychodrama Ezra Miller Speeds Down the Cannes Red Carpet at 'Die, My Love' Premiere in Surprise Festival Appearance Visceral Chilean Docs Head to Cannes for Fifth Annual Showcase, Featuring Chile and Cuba's Parallel Battles, a Chilean Cowboy, an Argentine Sex Worker "Wow. I'm so overwhelmed. Thanks to these amazing actors. I've got to get it together, I'll see you in a minute," she said, breaking into a run up the aisle and out of the Palais. In the film, Lawrence and her co-star Robert Pattinson proved worthy adversaries, who bicker and screw their way into emotional oblivion in Ramsey's tense portrait of a woman undone. The crowd at Cannes viscerally reacted to Lawrence's self-inflicted violence — smashing her head into mirrors, jumping through glass panes and scratching the walls until her fingers bled. "Die, My Love" is based on author Ariana Harwicz's 2017 novel of the same name, which centers on a new mother who enters psychosis after developing postpartum depression. Oscar winner Lawrence stars in Ramsay's film as the mother, with Pattinson playing her husband. The couple's marriage is thrown into disarray amid the wife's mental health struggle. Ramsay's supporting cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte. The film does not yet have a U.S. distributor but is surely going to be a big sales title out of Cannes. Ramsay is a Cannes veteran, with each of her five feature films now having premiered at the festival. Her 1999 debut "Ratcatcher" premiered in the festival's Un Certain Regard section and went on to win the BAFTA Award for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. Ramsay returned to Cannes in 2021 via Directors' Fortnight with "Movern Callar." She made her Cannes competition debut in 2011 with the Tilda Swinton-led "We Need to Talk About Kevin," and then returned to competition in 2017 with "You Were Never Really Here." That film won Cannes prizes for best screenplay and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix. "Die, My Love" is Ramsay's first directorial effort in eight years. Lawrence, who also produced "Die, My Love," attended the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a producer of the documentary "Bread and Roses," which world premiered in the special screenings section, but Ramsay's movie marks the first time Lawrence has found herself in Cannes competition. She's debuted previous movies at festivals such as Venice ("mother!") and TIFF ("Silver Linings Playbook," which went on to win her the Oscar for best actress). Pattinson is a Cannes regular, with "Die, My Love" joining the likes of "Good Time," "Maps to the Stars" and "The Lighthouse" on his list of Cannes premieres.
