Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson's Animalistic Descent Into Madness in 'Die My Love' Gets 6-Minute Cannes Standing OvationNew Foto - Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson's Animalistic Descent Into Madness in 'Die My Love' Gets 6-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation

Jennifer Lawrence has electrified the Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere of "Die, My Love," the latest directorial effort from the acclaimed Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay. The movie earned a 6-minute ovation following its world premiere. "Die, My Love" is in competition at Cannes and competing for the Palme d'Or. Ramsay cut her own ovation short, struck with emotion. More from Variety 'Die My Love' Review: Jennifer Lawrence Is a Mother Grappling with Postpartum Depression (and Punk-Rock Angst) in Lynne Ramsay's Showy Mess of a Marital Psychodrama Ezra Miller Speeds Down the Cannes Red Carpet at 'Die, My Love' Premiere in Surprise Festival Appearance Visceral Chilean Docs Head to Cannes for Fifth Annual Showcase, Featuring Chile and Cuba's Parallel Battles, a Chilean Cowboy, an Argentine Sex Worker "Wow. I'm so overwhelmed. Thanks to these amazing actors. I've got to get it together, I'll see you in a minute," she said, breaking into a run up the aisle and out of the Palais. In the film, Lawrence and her co-star Robert Pattinson proved worthy adversaries, who bicker and screw their way into emotional oblivion in Ramsey's tense portrait of a woman undone. The crowd at Cannes viscerally reacted to Lawrence's self-inflicted violence — smashing her head into mirrors, jumping through glass panes and scratching the walls until her fingers bled. "Die, My Love" is based on author Ariana Harwicz's 2017 novel of the same name, which centers on a new mother who enters psychosis after developing postpartum depression. Oscar winner Lawrence stars in Ramsay's film as the mother, with Pattinson playing her husband. The couple's marriage is thrown into disarray amid the wife's mental health struggle. Ramsay's supporting cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte. The film does not yet have a U.S. distributor but is surely going to be a big sales title out of Cannes. Ramsay is a Cannes veteran, with each of her five feature films now having premiered at the festival. Her 1999 debut "Ratcatcher" premiered in the festival's Un Certain Regard section and went on to win the BAFTA Award for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. Ramsay returned to Cannes in 2021 via Directors' Fortnight with "Movern Callar." She made her Cannes competition debut in 2011 with the Tilda Swinton-led "We Need to Talk About Kevin," and then returned to competition in 2017 with "You Were Never Really Here." That film won Cannes prizes for best screenplay and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix. "Die, My Love" is Ramsay's first directorial effort in eight years. Lawrence, who also produced "Die, My Love," attended the 2023 Cannes Film Festival as a producer of the documentary "Bread and Roses," which world premiered in the special screenings section, but Ramsay's movie marks the first time Lawrence has found herself in Cannes competition. She's debuted previous movies at festivals such as Venice ("mother!") and TIFF ("Silver Linings Playbook," which went on to win her the Oscar for best actress). Pattinson is a Cannes regular, with "Die, My Love" joining the likes of "Good Time," "Maps to the Stars" and "The Lighthouse" on his list of Cannes premieres. Dakota Johnson was interviewed by her "Materialists" co-star Pedro Pascal forElle UKand spoke about being cut off by her father, actor Don Johnson, when she did not get into Juilliard. Johnson did not have a college back-up plan, nor were the acting roles she was able to book at the time big enough to make her financially sound. "I didn't get in and my dad cut me off because I didn't go to college. So, I started auditioning. I think I was 19 when I did 'The Social Network,' and then little jobs and stuff after that," Johnson said. "For a couple of years it was hard to make money. There were a few times when I'd go to the market and not have money in my bank account or not be able to pay rent, and I'd have to ask my parents for help. But it certainly was not fun," she added. "The auditioning process, as you know, is the fucking worst." Applying to Julliard was also a nightmare for Johnson, who described told Pascal: "That fucking process was so awful and terrifying. When you get accepted for an audition, it's a two-day long chorus-line thing. You're supposed to get called back for a second audition, and I didn't. It was fine." "I really didn't want to go to college," she said. "And because Juilliard felt so small – the idea of being in a classroom with the same group of people, and figuring out how to be a human in that environment, after growing up surrounded by so many different kinds of people and immersed in different cultures through traveling all over… It just felt really wrong to lock myself in one place."Johnson and Pascal star with Chris Evans in "Materialists," the new romance drama from "Past Lives" Oscar nominee Celine Song. 8 shooting victims found "lying in a pool of blood" in South Africa bar

Police in South Africa launched a manhunt on Saturday for gunmen who killed eight customers at a tavern in the southeastern city of Durban. The attack late on Friday evening was the latest mass shooting in the crime-weary African nation that has one of the world's highest murder rates. The incident unfolded when an unknown number of gunmen entered the bar in Umlazi township and opened fire, police said. First responders found the eight dead people "lying in a pool of blood with multiple gunshot wounds",police said in a statement, adding that two of them were women. The victims were aged between 22 and 40 years old, police said. "Investigations into the possible motive of the killings are underway," they said. Shootings are common in South Africa, often fueled by gang violence and alcohol. Many people own licensed firearms for personal protection, yet there are many more illegal guns in circulation. There are around 75 murders a day in South Africa, according to police data. According to the most recent governmentcrime statistics,  6,953 people were murdered in the country from October 2024 to December 2024. Sometimes entire families are targeted. Last September, gunmenshot deadseven members of the same family, including three children, in an execution-style killing in their home in a rural part of the country. In 2013,10 members of the same family— including a 13-year-old — were killed in a mass shooting at their house in South Africa. Sometimes, more high-profile people are targeted. Last month, gunmen in South Africaabducted a U.S. missionaryfrom his church as he was delivering a sermon. Pastor Josh Sullivan was laterrescuedduring a shootout between police and his captors that left three suspects dead. In April 2024,soccer star Luke Fleurswas gunned down as he refilled his car at a gas station in South Africa. Six suspects werearrested. At least 27 dead as storms batter states from the Heartland to the East CoastNew Foto - At least 27 dead as storms batter states from the Heartland to the East Coast

At least 27 people were reported dead across several states in an expansive outbreak of severe weather from the Heartland to the East Coast -- with more potentially powerful storms in the forecast for Saturday. State officials reported 18 people were killed in Kentucky, seven in Missouri and two in Virginia. Most of the deaths in Kentucky occurred in Laurel County in the southeastern part of the state, about 130 miles southeast of Louisville. Some neighborhoods in the city of London saw total devastation -- homes blown away in the middle of the night with residents huddling in hallways and basements. On On Saturday, with whole blocks of homes gone, residents were left to sift through what remains of their homes. Lonnie Nantz, 78, said he was in bed with his wife when his daughters yelled a tornado was coming.  They held onto each other in their hallway as the home crumbled around them.  Pieces of his home were scattered all over his yard and his vehicles were destroyed by debris. Down the street, Kyndra Foster was with 13 family members in their basement. She said she believed they were going to die. The youngest child with her was just 4 months old. Her 8-year-old daughter has bruises on her face and didn't think she was going to make it through. Foster was in a wheelchair Saturday with a broken foot after being hit by a flying piece of debris. "This is another tough morning for Kentucky after a night of deadly weather," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement on social media. He said in a later statement, "The devastation from last night's deadly weather is heartbreaking, but we are going to make sure we get the support needed to recover and rebuild together." In Missouri, St. Louis was particularly hard hit. A reported tornado ripped through city neighborhoods Friday afternoon, tearing roofs off homes and leading to collapsed buildings. "I would describe this as one of the worst storms. Absolutely, the devastation is truly heartbreaking, and let's not forget people have lost their lives. We are continuing to make sure that we are identifying all those that are injured, in addition to the massive amount of property damage that has taken a huge toll," St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer said at a press conference Saturday. Spencer said five were killed and 38 were injured in St. Louis. Over 462,000 customers were without power across multiple states, stretching from Michigan to Tennessee. All told, at least 26 tornadoes were reported from Friday's storms in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Illinois and one from New Jersey. Softball-sized hail was reported in Barlow, Kentucky, and near Sullivan, Indiana, with greater than tennis-ball-size hail reported locally from Texas to Ohio. Two people died in Virginia after trees fell onto their vehicles during storms there on Friday, authorities said. In total, 15 states have reported storm damage from hail, winds and tornadoes from Missouri up to Michigan and out to New Jersey as severe storms continue tracking through the East-Central United States from Arkansas to Virginia. A tornado watch was issued for portions of Oklahoma and Texas until 10 p.m. Central Time, including Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls, Texas. Damaging wind gusts, large hail and a couple tornadoes are possible from any severe thunderstorms that move through. To the south, severe thunderstorm watches have been posted across portions of central into north Texas, including the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. In these areas, the tornado threat is lower, with damaging wind gusts and the potential for very large hail the primary concerns. Thunderstorms were are beginning to fire up and are expected to sweep across the watch areas into Saturday night. Strong thunderstorms continued across portions of South early Saturday morning, stretching from Arkansas to the Carolinas.
