Given the staggering number of unintentionally viral moments we’ve gotten from Dakota Johnson over the years—from limegate to her diva-off with Ellen DeGeneres —maybe it’s only natural that her dating life has become a matter of national interest. But honestly, who could do anything but gawk enviously at Johnson and her rumored current beau, musician Machine Gun Kelly, also known as Mgk? I’ll admit that I sort of absently thought Machine Gun Kelly was Travis Barker for the first few years of his rise to fame, but now I will forever know him by the name I’m sure he prefers: Dakota Johnson’s boyfriend.
Rumors have been flying about Johnson and Kelly since they were spotted together in Manhattan last month, but the couple officially made their daytime debut over the weekend, when they were seen stepping out of a studio in Los Angeles. Did the two really hit it off at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding , as has been reported, and have been wrapped in the blissful cocoon of new love ever since? There’s no way to know for sure (despite the fact that I, too, live in Los Angeles, we don’t run in the same circles…unless they also regularly find themselves getting their debit card declined at the luxury pet store on York Boulevard), but we can hope and dream, can’t we?
Neither Johnson nor Kelly is a stranger to the famous-for-famous relationship lifestyle, with Kelly co-parenting a daughter with his ex Megan Fox and Johnson dating Coldplay frontman Chris Martin for roughly eight years before enjoying a fling with Role Model . But whether Johnson and Kelly are indeed dating or just friends who hang out on weekends for the odd studio session (a likely story!), I feel the need to express my absolute admiration for this union. Johnson has always offered a delightfully offbeat interpretation of the Hollywood-ingenue archetype, so who better for her to date than an anarchist and reformed THC enthusiast who’s addicted to tattoos and diss tracks? Plus, they have acting in common—don’t forget, Kelly was in Bird Box !
Hopefully, their prior relationships have made the more-than-likely couple adept at navigating life in the public eye, because I, for one, want to see way more of them together.
